After my fiberglass contamination nightmare, I decided I had to find the best memory foam mattresses WITHOUT fiberglass so it wouldn’t happen again.

Yes, in case you didn’t read that post, many memory foam mattresses contain a fiberglass sock/layer underneath the top layer that is used as a fire retardant. Unfortunately, this fiberglass can leak out, and it can go EVERYWHERE especially if you unzip the cover that comes with the mattress.

I like memory foam mattresses more than traditional spring ones because they’re much more plush. So, I set out on a quest to find memory foam mattresses without fiberglass.

Here’s what I found:

1. TUFT & NEEDLE – Original Queen Adaptive Foam Mattress, CertiPUR-US, 100-Night Trial

Tuft & Needle is a trusted and leading brand in the mattress space. This 10-inch memory foam mattress contains T&N “adaptive foam” that is “engineered based on customer feedback and provides pressure relief where you need it most. An open-cell structure provides a flexible sleep surface that adjusts to you as you move throughout the night.”

It is supposed to help you sleep cool by pulling away heat. It’s also free of harmful chemicals or substances, complete with a CertiPUR-US certification.

The Tuft & Needle Original adaptive foam mattress has medium firmness.

Do Tuft & Needle memory foam mattresses contain fiberglass?

I researched this, and the answer is IT DEPENDS. Do NOT buy the Nod Mattress on Amazon because this one DOES have fiberglass! It’s the cheaper hybrid model, that’s why.

Here is source #1 of where I found this information directly on the Tuft & Needle website:

Our Original, Mint, and Hybrid Mattresses do not contain fiberglass in any of their components. Our fire barrier is a knit blend of polyester and cotton, which has been treated with a food-grade salt. Our fire barrier satisfies both the 1633 (open flame) and 1632 (cigarette) burn test requirements.”

And here is source #2, also on the Tuft & Needle website, but you have to do some digging to find it:

Great question! We know how important it is to get a good grasp on what you’d potentially be sleeping on. A type of fiberglass is often used as a part of the fire sock in mattresses, but none of our mattresses sold on our site use fiberglass or silica. Instead, the fire sock on the Original and Mint mattresses is a polyester/cotton blend knit fabric, treated with a food-grade salt while the one on the Hybrid is a polyester/ rayon batting built into the cover.

The Nod Mattress is made exclusively for Amazon and that particular model contains a fire sock, composed of four inert fibers and is inherently flame retardant. This barrier is permanently installed around the foam core of our mattress which is then fully encased within the outer cover. One of these fibers is a continuous glass filament that is a type of fiberglass. It actually looks like a thread. This thread is not like the fiberglass found in insulation and does not come into direct contact with the skin. We hope this helps! 2. Tuft & Needle Mint Queen Mattress – Extra Cooling Adaptive Foam with Ceramic Gel Beads

The Mint model is a step up with extra luxury. It has “super luxe knit cover”, ceramic gel beads, and an extra 4 inches of foam around the bottom foam layer for edge support. It also has 30% more graphite to help you sleep cool. This is a medium firmness mattress.

3. Brentwood Home Cypress Classic Cooling Charcoal Infused Memory Foam Mattress, Non-Toxic, Made in California, 11-Inch

Okay, if I were to buy a mattress right now, it would be this one by Brentwood. In fact, this is the memory foam mattress I wanted to buy a couple years ago, but it was out of my budget. Even so, it is EXTREMELY affordable compared to other mattresses. And best of all, they state in their product description that they are fiberglass free! This is an extremely eco-friendly mattress; it’s Greenguard Gold certified nontoxic and has CertiPUR-US certified foams. You can rest assured there’s nothing scary in this one! Really appreciate this company. The product description claims that this memory foam mattress is suitable for side, back, and stomach sleepers.

4. Milliard Semi Firm Memory Foam Mattress, CertiPUR-US Certified (10 Inch, Queen)

The Milliard memory foam mattress is 10 inches thick (7.5-inch high density foam base and 2.5-inch responsive memory foam). The cover is removable and machine washable. And it’s CertiPUR-US certified.

Per the Amazon product description: “An inner cotton rib cover provides chemical- and fiberglass- free fire safety so you can sleep safe and sound.”

5. Sunrising Bedding 12″ Gel Memory Foam Mattress, Firm

This fiberglass-free memory foam mattress is 12 inches thick (3.5-inch air gel memory foam layer and 8.5-inch high density foam base). It has a tencel mattress cover that is removable and washable and fireproof (without using fiberglass!). This mattress has a firm feel.

Do Lucid Mattresses Have Fiberglass?

The answer is…maybe? I bought a Lucid memory foam mattress back in 2019, and I unzipped the cover at least once, and I’m PRETTY sure there was no fiberglass sock inside. BUT that exact Lucid mattress model I bought is no longer in stock on Amazon. Also, when I read Amazon reviews of Lucid mattresses, there are some reviews that claim there is fiberglass in the Lucid mattress they got.

I emailed Lucid to ask if their mattresses have fiberglass, and I got this non-answer:

“Thank you for reaching out to us today. Rest assured that all of our mattresses have been tested and do meet or exceed the federal government’s guidelines for safety. Most of our foam products are CertiPUR-US® certified for safety. There are no harmful chemicals or fire retardants used in the manufacturing of the product. Having a hard time finding a memory foam mattress without fiberglass that you actually like? Here’s an Alternative:

BedStory 3 Inch Memory Foam Mattress Topper, Gel Swirl Queen Size Foam Bed Toppers for Pressure Relieving, Ventilated Mattress Pad CertiPUR-US Certified

Just get a memory foam mattress TOPPER and put it over a regular mattress. The problem is that SO many memory foam mattresses contain fiberglass layers as a fire retardant, but it’s much less of a problem with a traditional mattress. If you’re looking for the plush feel of memory foam, just get a topper. The toppers typically don’t have fiberglass socks on it; it’s just the foam.

Do Tempur-Pedic Mattresses Use Fiberglass?

I could not find the answer for this on the internet, so I checked a real-life Tempur-Pedic LUXEbreeze mattress—and YES, it does have fiberglass in it! Here is photographic proof from the Tempur-Pedic mattress at a friend’s house:

Having said that, though, when I thoroughly inspected the bedding on this Tempur-Pedic mattress, as well as the bedframe and the floors, I did NOT spot any fiberglass like I would have with a cheap Amazon memory foam mattress. Tempur-Pedic mattresses are high-end, expensive products. I think they do a better job of containing the fiberglass.

Even so, after what I went through with my fiberglass nightmare, I personally wouldn’t buy any mattress that contained fiberglass.

Do Casper mattresses contain fiberglass?

A lovely reader named Lauren alerted me that the Casper Original Foam mattress DOES have fiberglass, based on her personal experience.

What’s your favorite fiberglass-free memory foam mattress?

I hope this post has shown you that when it comes to memory foam mattresses without fiberglass, you’ve got options! They can be harder to track down, but I did the research for you. Hope this helps!
